A small kitchen usually has two problems: not enough counter space and cabinets that eat everything you put in them. These small kitchen organization ideas fix both, and none of them need a contractor.

I have a small kitchen. Not in actual size, but in the fact I only have four countertops. That makes the way I organize everything extremely important. Half of the counters are automatically taken up by my breadbox, dish rack, utensils and of course… my decorations. Maximizing my space is extremely important, because I am so limited. Additional storage space means all my cookware goes on the shelves, not on the counter top. Tiered shelves for the spice rack so I get as much as I can out of it…

1. Clear the counters first

Keep out only what you use every day. Coffee maker, maybe a knife block, maybe a utensil crock. Everything else goes in a cabinet. Clear counters are the biggest change you can make.

2. Use the wall

A magnetic knife strip and a utensil rail with hooks take tools off the counter and out of the drawer.

3. Add shelf risers in every cabinet

Plates on the bottom, bowls on the riser. It roughly doubles a cabinet.

4. Store lids vertically

A lid organizer or a simple file sorter keeps pot lids standing up instead of sliding around.

5. Put pull-out bins under the sink

Under-sink cabinets are deep and awkward. Two pull-out bins or a two-tier sliding organizer fix that.

6. Hang things inside cabinet doors

Adhesive hooks or a small rack inside a door hold measuring cups, foil, and wrap.

7. Use an over-the-sink cutting board or drying rack

It turns the sink into extra counter space when you need it.

8. Add a rolling cart

A slim cart fits next to the fridge or between counter and wall and holds oils, spices, or small appliances.

9. Stack pans with protectors

Felt pan protectors let you stack nonstick pans without scratching them.

10. Get rid of duplicates

Most small kitchens have three spatulas and two can openers. Keep the best one of each.

Start here

Clear the counters, add risers, and fix under the sink. Those three take one afternoon and change how the whole kitchen feels.
