Cozy is mostly lighting, texture, and a few things that make a room feel lived in. None of it has to be expensive. These cozy living room ideas work in a small apartment and on a budget.
Your living room is usually the first place a person gets a feel for you. Is it clean? Is it organized? How adult are you that you have matching couch pillows? I love cozy everything, my couch being cozy, my lighting being cozy, it sets the mood for everything else.
1. Turn off the overhead light
Use two or three lamps at different heights instead. This is the biggest cozy change and costs almost nothing.
2. Switch to warm bulbs
Warm white (about 2700K) bulbs everywhere. Cool bulbs make a room feel like an office.
3. Layer throws and pillows
Two or three pillows in different textures and one throw on the couch. Mix knit, linen, and something soft.
4. Add a rug
A rug that’s bigger than you think you need makes a room feel finished and warmer underfoot.
5. Bring in plants
Real or faux. A tall plant in a corner fills empty space.
6. Use curtains, hung high
Hang curtain rods close to the ceiling with curtains that reach the floor. The room looks taller and feels softer.
7. Add a few candles or a warm-glow lamp
Even battery candles help in the evening.
8. Make a reading corner
A chair, a lamp, a small side table, and a blanket. One spot like that makes the whole room feel cozy.
9. Keep surfaces mostly clear
Cozy isn’t cluttered. A few things you like, and storage baskets for the rest.
On a budget
Start with bulbs and a lamp. Then pillows and a throw. Then a rug. That order gets the most change for the least money.
